Printer has 2 black ink cartridges...how do they work?

My Canon ip4300 uses the 5PGBK and the 8BK cartridges, both black. I don't really care that one is ';more black'; or whatever the difference is. The 5PGBK tank is low and the other one hasn't been touched, so obviously it's been printing from only the one tank. How do I get the printer to utilize the other tank? The Preferences and Help files of course have been no help...Printer has 2 black ink cartridges...how do they work?
The 5PGBK is your everyday text black. The 8BK one is your photo black (makes a big difference when printing on photo paper).

The printer automatically chooses which is needed depending on what you are printing.

They are great printers. Sometime print a picture on photo paper you'll be amazed at the quality that machine can print!
