Printer and black ink problem?

My dad has a kodak printer that worked just fine until he brought it home after my sister borrowed it. Every still works and prints correctly when its scanning a copy of printing kodak pictures except for printing from our computer. For some reason, it can't print black. It can print back ONLY when the printer is doing things by itself, not from the computer. There is nothing wrong with the ink carts. We tried many. Of course we tried the automatic cleaner tool on the printer and unplug all the cords many times. Nothings working when it comes to printing black. Is there a setting someone accidentally clicked on the computer or printer that makes this printer only print in color when we use the computer to print, or is the printer broken? (I don't know what my did with the computer.) Thank you!Printer and black ink problem?
You didn't specify the make or model so it is pretty hard to guide you in the right direction.

If it is a HP product, open the toolbox installed in the start menu and go in printer Services menu. Make sure that the 2-color cartridge mode is checked and not , the one-cartridge one. That should solve your problem.Printer and black ink problem?
Have you checked the ';preferences'; on the printer software control screen (whatever it's called--menu--where you select number of copies, etc.). For my printer, not a Kodak, you can select using either color or black ink or both. I suggest you delete the software for the printer and reinstall the drivers, etc., using either the disk that came with the printer or going to the Kodak web site to upload for free what you need for the model of the printer. Have you checked the cartridges really carefully to make sure there isn't extra plastic covering just the part of the cart where the ink comes out. Good luck.
